The transition from a manufacturing to an information society gives countries opportunities to go beyond incremental changes to radical transformation that is progressive, efficient, and ‘green’. It is vital for governments and businesses to consider how to achieve long-term sustainable development and how technology enables rapid sustainable growth. Governments should actively support the establishment of an efficient framework for using ICT to fuel growth that is sustainable. Winning Through Good Governance
For many companies, the board agenda is focused on priorities such as shareholder value, policy and strategy, finance, mergers and acquisitions, control and risk management, and senior management selection and remuneration. These are perceived to be more important than sustainable development. Board directors – both executive and non-executive – cannot afford to ignore these developments. On the one hand, they need to understand and respond to changing stakeholder expectations of the role of business. On the other hand, they need to communicate what they consider being realistic expectations of what business can and cannot achieve, and what they consider to be the responsibilities of others. This session is construed to discuss why in the present cocktail of crises, it is important for companies to look at the aggregation of the triple bottom line and corporate governance.

Sustainable Business Opportunities in Emerging Countries

This session seeks to demonstrate how leading companies from some of the emerging countries are responding to the twin challenges through new business models without losing sight of core sustainability objectives. Initial successes in emerging countries reflect the incredible potential in the alignment of sustainable development needs and business value. These successes are illustrations of great determination to achieve sustainable practices, but they also showcase the huge opportunities that emerge from such practices. Plenary Balancing Economic Growth with Natural Resources

It is common knowledge that growth and natural resources have been at conflict in the current style of economic development. It is also increasingly understood that they need not be at conflict. Economic growth can continue without straining natural resources. However, the big question is ‘how’. Governments need to come up with necessary policies, businesses need to be sincere with their operations and look for alternate methods, and community-based organizations need to be honest watch-dogs. This session explores the challenges, the solutions, and suggestions on meeting high economic growth balanced with conserving natural resources.

Promoting Sustainable Tourism: Reducing the Footprint

With a contribution to the tune of 10.7% to the total global Gross Domestic Product and a share of about 10% of the World’s employment, the global travel and tourism industry has been prioritised as an important driver for economic development, however with an equally large environment footprint, producing significant impacts on natural resources, consumption patterns, pollution and social systems. As more regions and countries focus on developing their tourism industry and realise its economic potential, there is an urgent need to promote and integrate sustainable planning and management into the tourism sector to reduce its footprint and make it a sustainable model. This panel discussion endeavours at sharing experiences, information and perspectives on sustainable tourism strategies in order to facilitate key stakeholders- decision-makers and actors in tourism industry, the societies hosting tourists and the tourists themselves, to appreciate and develop policies and attitudes, explore areas of opportunity in sustainable tourism leading to a better understanding of the multifaceted relationship between tourism and sustainable development.

Climate Change: The Defining Challenge
Climate change has recently been labelled as the ‘defining challenge’ by some global leaders including UNSG Ban Ki Moon. It is as much a defining challenge for businesses as it is for governments. Forward-looking companies are starting to realize that they can gain competitive advantage by taking the lead on climate change. Businesses are increasingly focussed on the opportunities generated in the move to a low-carbon economy, as a scientific consensus is emerging that industrialized countries will need to cut GHG emissions by at least 80 per cent by 2050. Rapid progress will be needed in the next few years. Leading companies, challenging their climate change strategy and helping them prepare for a carbon-constrained world. Companies will do better if they future-proof against risks, identify opportunities, and innovate to develop low-carbon products and strategies.
